What are Lag Screws?

Lag screws are extremely tough fasteners that are very large compared to ordinary screws (1/4” in diameter or larger). Unlike wood screws that thread as they enter, hex head lag screws require a hole to be drilled before they can be used. Since wood lag screws are usually used to connect heavy lumber or other heavy materials that bear an intense load, they require a nut that adds extra strength and security.

Lag Screw Options

Value Fastener offers a large, in-stock selection of galvanized steel and 18-8 stainless steel lag screw options in various finishes, including zinc and black oxide. We stock a wide range of diameters and lengths, including metric lag screw options. Our inventory includes full-bodied trimmed hex lag screwsfull-thread indented hex lag screws, and hex flange lag screws with serrated hex washers.

Common Applications for Lag Screws

Lag screws are ideal for applications that require the anchoring of a heavy load or as a heavy-duty connection device. Other common uses include:
  • Lumber framing
  • Connecting heavy machinery to flooring surfaces
  • Numerous other carpentry applications

What Material Should I Choose for My Lag Screws?

Value Fastener offers lag screws in galvanized steel and stainless steel material options. Stainless steel offers naturally enhanced corrosion resistance without a finished coating that self-heals when introduced to corrosive materials. Galvanized steel lag screws are produced with a sacrificial zinc coating that is designed to wear out prior to the steel substrate. Both options offer corrosion-resistant properties. However, for the longest-lasting corrosion resistance, stainless steel provides the best protection.

Lag Screw Head Options

While more common wood and sheet metal screws are available in multiple head types, lag screws are only available with hex heads. The purpose of the hex head design is to add as much torque as possible, which can be applied with a power drill and driver bit.
